Prayer: The Art of Believing, by Neville Goddard, Chapter 5 concluded and Chapter 6

More discussion this week about how Neville views and explains our ability to influence others with our “prayers,” with prayers being defined by Neville as, “the art of believing that which is denied by the sense.”

Cindie stops on a curious phrase that Neville uses: “The subject (the person we are praying to influence) has no power to resist your controlled subjective ideas of him unless the state affirmed by you to be true of him is a state he is incapable of wishing as true of another.” This is certainly an odd way of expressing his thoughts, so discussion is warranted.

His next paragraph provides some clarification plus some more confusion. It begins with the phrase, “Provided the idea is acceptable, success depends entirely on the operator not upon the subject who, like compass needles on their pivots, are quite indifferent as to what direction you choose to give them. If your fixed idea is not subjectively accept by the one toward whom it is directed, it rebounds to you from whom it came.”

The notion that the idea must be acceptable foreshadows the possibility that Neville is talking about vibration, a presumption that proves out at the end of the chapter.

But the sentence that finally brings clarity says, “The only power to reject a subjective word is to be incapable of wishing a similar state of another — to give presupposes the ability to receive.” So when he talks about being unable to wish the same state on another, what he’s really talking about is not being in a vibrational state of receiving.

While the phrasing is awkward for this day and age, I’m sure Neville thought it was necessary and appropriate for the day and age when he wrote it, some 70+ years ago.

Haunted By The Loss Of A Loved One

Just before we did this podcast, Walt saw a post on Facebook by a woman whose partner had died. He made the subject of that post the subject of this podcast. Among other things, the original poster wrote, “The pain of losing his physical presence never ever goes away!”

Linda points out that sometimes pain is something you need to go into and move through. We discuss a variety of different angles to this.

Toward the end of the podcast we move to a discussion of a mantra that Linda had been using to tremendous effect. For the last 10 minutes of the show we repeat the mantra together, inviting our listeners to join us. The result was a huge boost in apparent energy around us. Very cool!

The Art of Believing, by Neville Goddard, Chapter 5

Great chapter! We discover that Neville was actually about 75 years ahead of his time in describing fiber optics! Of course, that wasn’t his intent at the time, but nevertheless …

He speaks about being able to transmit thoughts over great distances, regardless of the space involved, and he talks about doing so via beams of light, which is exactly what fiber optics do.

We also discuss Neville’s presentation about the nature of subconscious assumptions and all of the ways that they can actually hinder us from manifesting what we want most.

There’s a great quote from this chapter, “Heaven is your subconsciousness. Not even a sunburn is given from without. The rays without only awaken corresponding rays within. Were the burning rays not contained within man, all the concentrated rays in the universe could not burn him.

We will finish this chapter next week and then dive into Chapter 6.

Prayer, The Art of Believing, by Neville Goddard, Chapter 3

It has been awhile since we needed to spend more than an hour on a single chapter of one of Neville's books, but we ran into that need today.

The third chapter in the book has a lot of meat to it, and we came hungry to eat!

Neville creates an interesting use of the word "subjective" in that he pivots from use of the word in regard to a concept toward use of the word as describing personhood. It's a fascinating blurring of word boundaries. His purpose? To establish a concept of telepathy!

In essence, Neville describes a method of influencing others through the thoughts we put out about them. This is a subject that fascinates many different branches of LOA adherents. Not just Neville's followers, but also the followers of Abraham, Napoleon Hill, Dale Carnegie, and many others often wrestle with the question: to what degree can we influence the thoughts, feelings, ideas, and choices of others?

He also discusses what we, today, would call the placebo effect, the ability to heal based upon belief.

Richard becomes more interested in Donald Shimoda's teachings and less interested in flying passengers in this section of the story. Louis and Walt discuss some of our favorite Messiah Handbook sayings from these chapters including, "Argue for your limitations, and they're yours." Also, "Imagine the universe beautiful and just and perfect. Then be sure of one thing: the Is has imagined it quite a bit better than you have."

Chapter 9 in particular includes a wonderful little story within the story of how Richard asks a question about why we're here, and Donald answers it by taking Richard to see, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. This story illustrates better than any other in the book how we can understand the fact that everything in life is an illusion and why it is we put up with it all.

Also, Richard unwittingly conducts a deafening experience with celestial music.

Cindie and Walt agree that they never thought they’d be talking about prayer on the podcast. Both of us have histories of avoiding the use of the word, replacing it with other concepts.

But the way Neville Goddard uses the word is (as usual) quite different from the way organized religion uses it.

He emphatically and specifically rejects the traditional ceremonies and external pomp and circumstance surrounding what prayer means for many religious believers.

Looking deeper, he finds that prayer is actually a form of communication with our subconscious minds. He draws a parallel between The Father and the subconscious mind. He also draws a parallel between man and objective manifestation.
